I had been debating whether to make Emily a Halloween costume for ages and after realising her cousins were coming over for a party dressed up I decided on Monday (yep that's right; two days before Halloween) to make her an outfit. Emily loves watching Tangled and Cinderella and it has been on my to do list to make her a Rapunzel outfit after seeing the Rapunzel wig tutorial on the amazing Sew like my Mom blog. Spookily on the same day I was starting to make it she posted her tutorial for a Rapunzel costume. I have also been inspired by this Snow White dress (if you haven't already been to the Homemade by Jill or Sew like my Mom blogs you really need to as they are so inspiring). I found the skirt fabric in Glasgow and knew it would be perfect and just made a very simple skirt with two rectangles and a bit of elastic. I then just stitched on some lace to the bottom to look like a underskirt. The top was such a bargain. Whilst doing our weekly shop in Asda I found a pack of 3 vests for £3. I used one of the vests for the main body and stitched on a ribbon at the front. I then followed the tips on the Sew like my Mom post and traced a sleeve pattern using one of Emily's t-shirts, cut it from one of the vests, and cut strips of pink from the 3rd vest in the pack then simply stitched it onto the vest straps.
The wig stitched up surprisingly easily although I did end up using 2 balls of wool so she wasn't in it super long as she got hot.
As you can see it was a big hit. I wish I had caught a picture of when she first saw herself in the mirror; as my mother in law would say; if she was chocolate she would lick herself!!
So there is my first attempt at a costume or even clothing for Emily. No where near the great standards of Sew like my Mom or Homemade by Jill but I'm really pleased with how it has turned out. I'm in trouble now though as the next day Emily asked me to now make her a Cinderella dress!

Great job! Emily looks thrilled in her Rapunzel costume. My daughter (Sew Like My Mom) is always tickled when she is able to inspire someone's creative side. You are a wonderful mom and Emily will always remember how you took the time to make her so happy.
